How to know when it is time

Slide Are There Signs? This is a difficult topic to discuss as there is not a blanket answer that can account for all the unique situations pet parents encounter with their furry loved ones. However, there are some good guidelines to follow and questions to reflect on. We always tell owners that if your furry family member is having more bad days then good then this may be a sign it is time. A bad day would be not eating, not drinking, copious amounts of vomiting and/or diarrhea ,acting lethargic, seems to be in pain, change in their sleep pattern and overall not themselves. They do not need to experience all of the above signs listed but enough that they are not themselves. If your furry family member has cancer or a chronic illness but is still eating, still drinking, has a good energy level and is urinating and defecating normally then this sounds like a good quality of life. Another scenario is if your furry family member’s mental health is failing or their body is failing. This is the case usually with arthritis, severe neurological diseases that affect the spinal cord/brain or dementia. In these instances you should reflect how your beloved furry family member was just a few months ago.

About Dr. Santore

Dr. Santore graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2010.  She obtained her BS in Biology from Temple University with a minor in philosophy. She was born and raised in Southwest Philadelphia but lived in Southern New Jersey starting in the middle of high school.  Recently she relocated to Chester County, Pennsylvania to raise her family.  Dr. Santore spent 14 years in general practice working with dogs, cats and small mammals. Briefly, she spent time providing end-of-life care and in home euthanasia services with a corporate owned business.  She has also spent some time teaching for a veterinary technician program as well. Recently, she has performed various relief services locally and even dabbled in telemedicine as well.  Dr. Santore has a passion for senior care and end of life care.  After years of working in many different aspects of veterinary medicine, Dr. Santore is excited to pursue her dream of providing hospice, senior care and in-home euthanasia services to five local counties in Pennsylvania.  In her free time Dr. Santore loves to travel, try various restaurants, exercise, and spend time with her family. She is married to her high school sweetheart husband and has two school age children.  She has two Shih Tzu mix dogs named Hendrix and Stitch currently.  However, she will never forget her other personal pets that she has lost throughout the years that contributed to her true calling of lovingly guiding furry family members over the rainbow bridge.
